Chloramine Removal and Water Disinfection in Swimming Pools

The biggest problem in chlorinated swimming pool water is that chlorine reacts extremely rapidly with nitrogen compounds in the water to give rise to problematic disinfection by-products (DBP) such mono-, di-, and trichloramine. Especially, trichloramine, NCl3, has a very strong irritating effect on the eyes, nose, throat and bronchial tubes.

For several years now, Ultraaqua has focused R&D activities on dechloramination based on photocatalysis. Through this work, the most important processes and parameters have been identified. On the basis of this knowledge the MultiRay pool water UV series has been developed.

The key components of the MultiRay pool water UV-series are very special UV lamps and their adapted electronic lamp drivers. Gas filling and synthetic quartz composition results in UV emission spectrum optimal for the degradation of chloramine fractions. An additional benefit of the individually fitted electronic high frequency lamp drivers is market leading UV-lamp life time of 6000 hours.

Furthermore, reactor geometries and electronic control systems have been designed to reduce operating costs to a minimum. Large flanged connections and body geometry results in very low head loss even at max flow rate.
The intelligent PLC control enables both automatic stepless lamp dimming and diurnal power variation. Both features adds positively to ensure energy efficient operation.

Material selection and components of high industrial quality guarantees long-term trouble-free operation in the often very hot, humid and corrosive pool environments.
